I need help picking a language to learn?

i am going to learn a language with my mom. we started with russian, but she doesn't know any other languages and it was taking her a real long time to learn it, it was also pretty hard for me. so i decided to try an easier language and do italian because it's closer to english and because i can speak some spanish. but i would rather learn turkish or russian. do you think it would be worth going for the harder language if it takes forever? also, what kind of software or learning technique should i do?
