What is the earliest time to get ready for a wedding?

I'm getting married on July 4th 2012! I was thinking that of getting the wedding stuff and the wedding dress a whole lot earlier, like 8 months before the wedding! What is your opinion of how early to get everything ready and is my opinion good, 8 months before the wedding! Thanks
