Can i invite people to my bridal shower that are not invited to my wedding.?

So I've walked up on a little bit of a dilemma. My fiance and I are have a FAMILY ONLY wedding but I want my friends to be able to come to a little party "bridal shower" before the wedding so they don't feel left out. I know the etiquette says that the people that you invite to your shower you are supposed to invite them to your wedding. However, money is tight and we have tons of family coming to the wedding as it is. We honestly can not accompany any more guests. My question is would it be absolutely horrible if I invited my friends and such to my bridal shower but not the wedding?
