What is a social wedding?

is there such thing as a social wedding in india. where i guess u could say its a fake wedding and not legalized by the court or sumthing like that. im from america and want to marry a man here in india and they called it a social wedding. my fiance tells me that america wont recognize if i get married to him here. but i dont know what to believe. anyy help plz?
