I am making my first tiered wedding cake. 3 Tier squares of 16", 14", and 12"... One question...?

I am wondering if I should have a cardboard cake board between each tier? I know all about using straws or dowels to support each tier, but none of the youtube videos say whether there is cake board in between each or if it is just cake on cake... Someone help pls thank you!
